More or less we all understand that thoughts create emotions. What is not clear to us is that according to our emotions our organs are leaded to chain reactions in order to cope with the circumstances. Whether or not circumstances are real or fictitious the results are the same…
The autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic) is responsible to translate our emotions and order our glands to produce hormones. Our emotions are invisible energies in motion. You could feel the emotion rushing through your body like waves!
Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems usually do opposite things in the body.
The sympathetic nervous system prepares your body for physical and mental activity. It makes your heart beat faster and stronger, opens your airways so you can breathe more easily, and inhibits digestion.
The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for bodily functions when we are at rest: it stimulates digestion, activates various metabolic processes and helps us to relax.
Autonomic nervous system balance is an essential key for our health.
If you could observe your thoughts all day long you would realize that 80% of them contain some sort of negative content. Constant streams of intense emotions like fear, frustration and anger overtax our autonomic nervous system with stress signals, causing body imbalance which leads to several illnesses
It’s been scientifically proven that positive thoughts are strengthening the immune system. Negative emotions on the other hand have the opposite effect making us prone to illness.
How can you overcome negative thoughts and embrace positive thinking
Observe your thoughts! This is a very powerful tool! You’ll realize that they are often related to something that happened in the past or something that may happen in the future. We get too focused on a small mistake or one bad day instead of focusing on the other 95% of our life that tends to be positive. Make it a habit to give thanks for a few of the things you may take for granted…
Question your thoughts. Ask yourself whether or not you’re making mountains out of molehills. Maybe you’re just tired or hungry or overworked and negativity is clouding your mind. As Anais Nin said “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”
Zoom out. Ask yourself a question like: Will this matter in 5 years? Or even 5 weeks?
Start making it a habit to bring yourself back to the present moment. Do something like focus only on your breathing, get out of your head and put your attention on what’s around you.
